The internet opens up a whole world of exciting opportunities for children - learning, communicating and entertainment. However, just as it is important to guide children and protect them against risks in the 'real world', so it is that we do so in the 'virtual world' too.
New technology has brought both these opportunities and risks closer to children. Growing up with this technology, children are quick to learn how it works and seem to use it almost instinctively! As part of the Computing curriculum, children are taught to be digitally literate and understand how to be a responsible online citizen.
Nevertheless, as many children have greater access to internet technologies at home (through PCs, laptops, tablets, games, mobiles and so on), we believe it is vital that parents and carers have access to guidance and advice about how to help and protect their children in the online world; for instance, how to use parental controls, which websites and games are suitable for different age-groups, and what to do if you suspect your child is being bullied online.

  • Think You Know?! - Find the latest on visiting your favourite websites and using new technology here. Use your knowledge of staying safe online to play games too

  • Parentzone - Designed to help make your life easier! Advice for lots of things including internet safety (selfies etc)

  • Cyber bullying- advice on dealing with it - What can you do to prevent cyberbullying? And, what should you do if your child is being cyberbullied? This publication, written for parents, carers and teachers, gives step-by-step guidance. It also outlines different technologies/sites where cyberbullying is a risk, and providers' contact details if required in the event of cyberbullying.

You may be interested to read at least the executive summary (p4-5) of the comissioner's report. It provides an illuminating and up-to-date profile of  8-12 year-olds' views of social media and the impact of social media on children's wellbeing. Worth a read - if only those 2 pages.
